Professional sports is one arena where people are constantly performing rituals. Whether it's growing the 'playoff beard' or not stepping on the baseline, it's become part of the game. It's completely ridiculous though.The Times has a great piece on the role of magic and rituals in our everyday lives.
Perhaps the most interesting section is the one concerning religion and when it is first exposed to children:
“The point at which the culture withdraws support for belief in Santa and the Tooth Fairy is about the same time it introduces children to prayer” .
